How Do Fiber Optic Couplers Work And How Are They Made?

May 17th, 2008 ColinYao Posted in Computers and Technology | No Comments »

:: The need for fiber optic couplers

We use electronic couplers all the time: such as a telephone coupler which lets you connect both a telephone and a fax machine to the same telephone line. Or a CATV coupler which lets you connect several TV sets to a single cable from Comcast. Basically you can buy these couplers from Home Depot or other electronic retailers.

Optical couplers have the same functionality as electronic couplers: They split the signal to multiple points(devices). Fiber optic couplers are needed for tapping(monitoring the signal quality) or more complex telecommunication systems which require more than simple point-to-point connections, such as ring architectures, bus architectures and star architectures.

:: Passive couplers and active couplers

Fiber optic couplers can be either active or passive devices. The difference between active and passive couplers is that a passive coupler redistributes the optical signal without optical-to-electrical conversion. Active couplers are electronic devices that split or combine the signal electrically and use fiber optic detectors and sources for input and output.

:: The difference between electronic couplers and fiber optic couplers

Electronic couplers are easy to make because electric current flows as long as you have physical contact between conductors. But optical signal is in a completely different domain. You have to align the tiny optical fiber cores precisely (9um for single mode and 50um or 62.5um for multimode fibers), so there won’t be a huge power loss when you split the signal.

:: Understanding fiber optic coupler types

Fiber optic coupler types are often defined by their input and output port numbers. They are designed to fulfill different applications.

1. T couplers

T couplers are also called Y couplers which is based on their look. T couplers are three port device with one input and two output ports. One major application is tapping(power monitoring): the input power is split to 5% and 95% respectively on the two outputs. The 5% port is connected to system monitoring hardware to monitor the line quality. Another major application is to split the input to two equal outputs.

2. Tree couplers

Tree couplers usually take one input and split it into multiple (more than two) outputs. Tree couplers can also be used backward (bidirectional) as a combiner. Multiple output signals (now function as the input actually) are combined to a single input (now as the output actually).

3. Star couplers

Star couplers are different from tree couplers because they have multiple inputs and multiple outputs. The fibers radiate from the central point likes a star. They often have same number of inputs and outputs (although not always the case).

4. wavelength selective couplers

Wavelength selective couplers are actually WDM (wavelength division multiplexer). They split the signal not based on their power but rather based on their wavelengths. The input signal has several wavelength channels(such as 1510nm, 1520nm, 1530nm, 1540nm and 1550nm, etc). The wavelength selective coupler then routes each wavelength to a different output port.

:: Fiber optic coupler manufacturing technologies

There are majorly three types of manufacturing technologies for fiber optic coupler: micro optics, fused-fiber and planar waveguide.

Micro optics technologies use individual optic elements such as prism, mirrors, lens etc to construct a optical route which functions as a coupler. This is a expensive approach and not as popular as the other two types.

Fuse-fiber couplers use the most basic material - optical fibers. Multiple fiber cores are melted together which let light transmit among them.

Planar waveguides are more like semiconductors. A planar wafer is used to make waveguide couplers. They are more often used for high port count couplers such as 12, 24, and 36 output ports.

As well go to http://www.officeupdate.microsoft.com to turn up potential patches since your Office programs.

3. Set up an firewall. Without an beneficial firewall, computer virus , worms, Trojans, adware and spyware could totally easy admittance your computer by the cyberspace. Circumstance had better be given to the profits and differences of opinion between computer hardware and software system based firewall programs.

4. Follow-up your web browser and e-mail settings as optimal certificate. How come had better you act these? Advanced Gaming Software Advances

May 16th, 2008 DanielMillions Posted in Computers and Technology | No Comments »

The gaming industry has undergone tremendous advancements over the past few decades. There are games that vary from the simple and basic to the intricate. Many now come with life-like three dimensional characters and sound effects.

There are many types of software available for the beginner as well as the experienced game developer. Technological advancements have made it possible for almost anyone to create his or her own and original games without being a computer programmer.

The introduction of artificial intelligence has added a sense of reality to both console and computer games. With AI games have reached the level where a gamer begins to feel they are an actual part of the game. Combined with Virtual Reality software and graphics one can immerse themselves completely in the experience.

There are four basic types of software that you will have to have to build the game from an idea to an actual creation. This software should be chosen based on your skill and experience level. One of the most important aspects of any game is the layout. The software used to create the surroundings such as the buildings and terrain is often called world-building software. This software will allow you to design the buildings to create large cities or small towns. It will also create mountains, lakes and any other type of geographical effect that you require for the game.

Most types of world building software will come pre-packed with a variety of textures to add to each individual item. Many will even include models that you can just drag and drop into the layout. To create customized characters you will need to use an image and graphic software. Characters can either be developed from original drawings or existing characters can be modified into new ones.

Once the basic character has been designed, 3D modeling software is needed to bring the game to life. It gives you the ability to add reality to the game by giving your items shape. This software is also used to create any items that you may need such as cars, animals, rocks and any weapons that your characters will use.

The last basic software required to create games is the audio software. Sound is important to any game but in some games the sound effects can be almost as important as the visual effects. Game software is available that packages that have all the tools you need packaged together for creating a game from start to finish. With these sets there is no need to have many individual software programs to design games.

With lots of these types of software you don’t even need to know computer programming. They will include models and layouts that you can change and modify to customize your game. The type of game that you want to design will require certain types of software. You can find many types of software that will allow you to make board games, puzzle games and educational games.

Role playing games are probably the most popular type of game right now. These games allow the player to actually feel like they are a part of the action by becoming the character. With dynamic PHP webpages and displays you gave a great number of options as to action to take. As well as the game board itself, there are chat rooms, and forums available so you can act out day to day living and communication with others as your character.

Password Protection, Encryption And Generation For Everyday Use

May 16th, 2008 LisaCarey Posted in Computers and Technology | No Comments »

With technology comes convenience, and the technology of the Internet grows each day allowing busy people and consumers to do more in less time. Some of the most often used Internet sites include; on-line banking, internet shopping, on-line bill paying, research at our fingertips, e-mail, instant messaging, photo image storing and creation and so much more. Not only can we communicate, pay bills complete many other day to day tasks, but we can also help our children with homework, do research, plan a vacation, make reservations (for restaurants to travel) and so many other things. But with this technology comes risks, especially as websites try to “personalize” the site to each individual, even to greeting you by name when you log in. As a result, more and more information is gathered, and to keep that information safe, more and more passwords created.

As personalization becomes standard as does our reliance on many websites to do everything from pay bills to monitoring assets the security of this information becomes of utmost importance. So, how do we complete all the forms for the sites we need as well as create passwords that are unique, unusual and that will protect our online services and accounts?

If you are like many people, you probably use one or two passwords, alternating them between sites, so you don’t forget your password. Or you write them down and store them somewhere—but not too far from the computer so you don’t have to go looking for them. Internet security experts, as well as many websites warn us of the dangers of an easy password as well as the dangers of having our passwords within easy access. Another situation that needs to be considered is what happens in the event of emergency, disability, illness or even death, and your family needs those passwords in order to keep your finances in order, and you are the only one who knew what your passwords are and where they are located.

Is there a safer alternative to writing them in an address book or on a piece of paper underneath my keyboard? Absolutely, there is a software system available to consumers called Roboform. This software not only generates original passwords but stores them, and personal and financial information frequently used when working online.

Roboform software completes online forms and creates securely encrypted passwords. It will even generate a random, highly safe password for you when you hit generate. It uses an artificial intelligence system that is created to identity forms, complete them as well as generate and safely store passwords, keeping your account information safe.

This form filler and password service saves time and effort as well as provides security by: managing passwords and logging you in automatically as well as filling in long forms for registration or shopping checkout with just a click. This function also cuts down on “keystrokes” making it more difficult for keylogger software to work in any possibly attempts to “steal” your information.

Roboform Features:

-The ability to create one identity, but have multiple credit cards, addresses, user names and passwords stored.

-Roboform detects and fills in drop down boxes.

-This software detects what formation of numbers need to be used, for example is the telephone number field presented in ten digits or a different format and completes the form correctly.

-Customization of information according to country locations and traditions. For example, date formats will be completed based on country location, so US dates will be month, day, year while foreign forms require day, month and year.

-Customization based on language.

-A highlight function that indicates that Roboform should only complete specific sections of the form.

Roboform Protection and Security services include:

-Encrypting passwords for increased security.

-Generation of random passwords.

-Detection of “phishing” websites and only completing forms on legitimate sites.

-Eliminates keyloggers, because the keyboard is not used to complete forms.

Roboform first became available in 1999. Because of its popularity and reliability, it has been translated into 30 languages and is used by millions around the world. Also available is RoboForm2Go, one of the first of applications that can operate from USB flash drives. RoboForm2Go is a portable version of RoboForm that allows consumers to their passwords with them and enjoy the conveyance of this service anywhere.

Roboform and Robofrom2Go are compatible with many different operating systems and software, including: Internet Explorer, AOL, MSN, Firefox, IE 7 and Vista.

The cost for a lap or desktop computer is $29.95. Roboform2Go for U 3 drives or non-U 3 drives is available for $19.95. The PALM version is $9.99. A 30 days free trial is available with a “No Questions Asked” Money Back Guarantee.

This service has been awarded PC Magazine’s Editor’s Choice Award, Soft32.

com’s Editor’s Review Award (Excellent in 5/5 categories) and the blue

ribbon FDM (Free Download Manager) User’s Choice Award. Independent consumer reviews say over and over that it is “easy to use,” “a quality time saver” and “fast, fast, fast.”

Roboform software can not only save consumers time (and time is money in many cases) but it also protects their personal and financial information. The creation of unique passwords as well as elimination of keylogger access makes all the conveniences of using the Internet, not only convenient but safe. Financial information, online bill paying and more can be done safely and effectively, and in case of emergency your family will have the information it needs all stored in one place, permitting them one more level of security not only financially but personally.

When Should I Clean My Windows Vista Registry?

May 15th, 2008 JasonZ Posted in Computers and Technology | No Comments »

The Microsoft Vista registry needs to be kept in top condition if you want your computer to run at 100% efficiency. Having a dirty and error ridden registry is the equivalent to having a broken and/or outdated computer. Why? Simply because nothing will work or because everything will be really, really slow. Having said that, the best thing that you can do is to get more active when it comes to your PC’s registry health. If you don’t, well, your computer won’t remain reliable for too long.

When it comes to registry repair, one of the biggest questions is “how often should I clean my Window’s Vista registry?” Generally speaking, at least once per week. However, there really is no “perfect” schedule for registry cleaning.

How often a person cleans his/her PC registry should be directly proportionate to how often the computer is used. For instance, if you only use the computer once per week, running a registry scan every week wouldn’t have much of an impact. But then again, if you were to use the computer every day for a month, and each day the computer was used for 6+ hours, then the frequency of scans would have to be increased to keep up with the accumulating errors.

Truth be told, you don’t really need a registry cleaner if your are 100% careful with all of your computer activity. Please note that you need to be 100% CAREFUL — not 80%, not 90%, not even 99%, 100% or nothing. Why 100% careful? Because any and every command you give to the computer is capable of creating a registry error. The more commands given, the more errors there will likely be — the more errors the registry accumulates, the more often you’ll need to run the vista registry cleaner.

If you only do a very few select things on your computer and NEVER EVER install or uninstall software, games, applications, etc. then you might actually get by without registry repair software. However, the chances of you not making a mistake and causing an error to occur are very remote — and all it really takes is 1 inconveniently located error to send your system into a downward spiral of sluggishness and random crashing.

Admittedly, it might not happen all at once — As a matter of fact, it could take a few weeks to a few months for you to notice the changes. But know this, it will happen if nothing is done to stop it. Those one or two weekly errors will continue to build and build until there are hundreds, all of which will be working together in order to turn your PC into a great big pile of junk.

For Safe & Effective Registry Repair, Use The Tips Below

1) Always properly uninstall programs, games, software, etc.

2) Run virus and spyware scans to get rid of any malicious software that may be placing harmful keys & entries into your registry.

3) Never try to manually fix your registry. Doing so could result in complete system instability.

4) Always back up your registry before you run a scan with your preferred registry cleaner. Most registry repair software comes equipped with a fast “back-up” feature.

5) Be sure that the registry cleaner you use is capable of cleaning your Microsoft Vista registry. Certain registry cleaners are built for certain operating systems and will likely do you more harm than good if used.

What Are Optical Fiber Amplifiers And How Do They Work?

May 15th, 2008 ColinYao Posted in Computers and Technology | No Comments »

:: Why do we need optical fiber amplifiers?

Basically what the optical fiber amplifiers solve is the traditional distance problem as in any long distance telecommunication system such as a trans-Atlantic link. As optical signals travel through the fiber, the signals become weaker in power. The farther you go, the weaker the signal become until it becomes too weak to be detected reliably.

Fiber optic communication systems solve this problem by using fiber amplifiers along the way. A repeater or amplifier is inserted into the system at a point where the signal has become weak, to boost the strength of the signal so it can be transmitted through another length of fiber cable. Many amplifiers or repeaters can be placed in sequence to keep the signal strong along the whole fiber link.

:: What are the differences between a repeater and an optical fiber amplifier?

Traditionally, electronic repeaters were used for optical signal amplification. A repeater is an opto-electro-opto device. It converts a weak optical signal into electronic signal, cleans up the electronic signal, and then converts the electronic signal back to optical signal with a lightwave transmitter. The lightwave transmitter emits much stronger power than the incoming optical signal and thus amplifies it.

However, this is an inconvenient and expensive process and which is why it has been replaced by the new optical fiber amplifiers technology.

An optical fiber amplifier is a purely optical device. It doesn’t convert the incoming optical signal to electronic signal at all. Basically, you can call it a in-line laser. And an optical fiber amplifier can simultaneously amplify dozens of optical channels since they do not convert each channel into electronic signals separately.

:: What are optical fiber amplifiers and how do they work?

Optical fiber amplifier is a section of optical fiber that is doped with a rare-earth element such as erbium or praseodymium.

The atoms of erbium or praseodymium can be pumped by high power light (pump laser) into excited state. But they are not stable in the excited state. When the optical signals that are to be amplified pass though the fiber, they stimulate the excited erbium atoms. The erbium atoms will jump from the high power level excited state into low power level stable state, and release their energy in the form of emitted light photons at the same time. The emitted photons have the same phase and wavelength as the input optical signal, thus amplify the optical signal.

This is a very convenient form of amplifier for an optical fiber communication system since it is an in-line amplifier, thus removes the need to do the optical-electrical and electrical-optical conversion process.

The pump laser wavelengths and the corresponding optical signal wavelengths are key parameters for operation of fiber amplifiers. These wavelengths depend on the type of rare-earth element doped in the fiber and also on the composition of the glass in the fiber.

Another important term in understanding fiber amplifiers is its “gain”. Gain measures the amplification per unit length of fiber. Gain depends on both the materials and the operating conditions, and it varies with wavelength for all materials.

For low input powers, the output power is proportional to the gains times the fiber length. Thus, P(output) = P(input) x Gain x Length

For high input powers, the gain saturation effect comes into play. So increment of input power produces less and less output power, which essentially means the amplifier has run out of the power it needs to generate more output.

Finding The Perfect Spy Cameras

May 15th, 2008 ReynaldiBaki Posted in Computers and Technology | No Comments »

There are a wide variety of security devices that you can use to protect your home and family, from finger print locks to trip wires. Many devices which could only be seen in movies in the past now have become a reality. Even better, the prices have also dropped over the years.

One of the most popular security gadgets today is spy camera. Depending on the type of the camera, you can choose to have professional installation or set it up yourself. However, many can be installed in minutes. Even multiple wireless spy cams can be installed easily.

Wireless spy cameras make use of radio frequency to transmit the images/videos captured. Many of them come with a built-in transmitter. The source of power comes from batteries and/or AC adaptor. Just make sure the camera is well powered and then connect the receiver to your TV set which has been set to a specific channel.

There are also wireless spy cameras with a rechargable battery. Such devices can be found in the form of a cellphone. People will not recognize that the cellphone is actually a wireless camera. With this type of camera there is no need to perform batter replacement. Another advantage of using such dummy cellphones is its mobility.

Spy cameras are available in various forms, from pens to sunglasses. These types of camera are very suitable for you who want to use a hidden camera when travelling. Normally such kits cost a few hundred dollars. However you may be able to find the ones cheaper in the market.

The maximum distance where the receiver is still be able to catch the videos transmitted should also be considered. Normally, the maximum distance between the camera and its receiver is about 30 metres (without obstruction).

There are also spy cameras which come with a built-in digital video recorder. The advantage of using such cameras are that their presence are harder to detect. You can of course purchase a spy camera and a recorder separately.

Another thing to consider is the audio feature that allows for both sound and video recording. Notice that not all of spy cameras are capable to transmit audio signals. Frequency transmitted (e.g. 1.2 or 2.4 GHZ) and resolution are some other things that you should think about in order to find a spy camera that will fit your needs.

The beauty of spy cameras today is you can connect them to a PC to extend its functionality. If you install a surveillance software on your PC you can even perform remote monitoring and surveillance via internet without having to spend much money. This way, your PC also acts as a video recorder.

A spy cam can be a great investment for home protection. In the market you can find the ones which are hidden in various things, from penholder to clock. However you can try to hide the camera in other common stuffs such as inside a doll or a wall picture. It depends on what you want to accomplish.

How To Keep Your Laptop In Top Shape

May 15th, 2008 BradlleyMckoy Posted in Computers and Technology | No Comments »

Foreign particles such as dust, pet hair and dander, cigarette ash, and residue can cut the life of your laptop short. If left unattended, these particles can affect the performance of fans, causing the components to overheat. And we all know what comes after that. If you want to get your money’s worth from your laptop, you’ll have to keep it clean.

Cleaning your laptop should be done at least once a year, as part of your maintenance program. Don’t worry, you won’t have to spend a dime hiring a computer technician or a specialist to do this. Just check your user’s manual and follow these quick tips:

What You’ll Need

Aside from time, patience and steady hands, you’ll need a few cotton swabs, compressed air, cleaning solution, and a soft cleaning cloth, like your old cotton shirts.

Cleaning the Exterior

Use a soft damp cloth to clean the casing - make sure it’s damp, not dripping wet. And use a cotton cloth, keep away from scratchy or abrasive cloths. Also, stick to mild cleaning products for this task, and remember to spray it on the cloth first. Never spray the cleaning agent directly onto the surface of the computer.

The Cooling Vents

You’ll need a can of compressed air and cotton swabs for the cleaning vents. Just be careful not to spray too hard as you might get liquid on the fan blades. Use the swabs to keep the fans in place while you clean it. Don’t spin the fan while cleaning or you could cause it to over spin.

I/O Ports

The I/O ports should only be moved after the vents have been cleaned. Use the swabs to wipe away larger chunks of accumulated dirt. You may use compressed air as well, just be careful not to blow dirt into the ports.

Display

Turn off your laptop before cleaning the display, this way you see dirt more easily. Use non-abrasive cloth such as cotton cloths or pre-moistened wipes - never tissues or paper towels - to clean your display. When using a cloth, you will need a monitor cleaning solution. Steer clear from amonia-based cleaners as these solutions leave a mark - more specifically, they leave a film on the display. If you can’t get monitor cleaning solution at your local computer shop, you can make your own by mixing one part water and one part isopropyl alcohol.

Keyboard

You can use compressed air to get rid of dirt stuck between the keys on your keyboard. If your user’s manual allows you to remove the keys for cleaning, then do so. You can take them all out and wash them with mild cleaning solution and a old toothbrush or cotton swabs. Just make sure you don’t lose a key and you put them back in the right place.

Like they say, prevention is always better than the cure. Sure, you can always clean your laptop - in this case, you must - but it would be much better if you kept it as clean as possible. You can do this by always keeping it away from food and drink. Make sure your fingers are also clean before you start working, or you’ll transfer residue on your laptop. And when not in use, try to keep it in a computer briefcase or any sort of protective covering.

You wouldn’t have to clean your laptop if you keep it in a computer briefcase and use personalized coaster sets to keep drink away from it. If you must, a pink Swiss Army knife makes the cleaning process fun. Visit ExecutiveGiftShoppe.com today.

The Need For A Data Recovery File Search

May 15th, 2008 SamMiller Posted in Computers and Technology | No Comments »

To recover computer files deleted from the Windows Recycle Bin or those that were lost because a hard drive became corrupted, a data recovery file search solution is necessary.

Aside from the two conditions previously mentioned, files could also get lost because of a virus or Trojan infection, software failure, or system shutdown. When any of these instances happen, computer users are faced with the dilemma of recovering files that may be important to them. Some computer users recreate their data, but this process may be time-consuming, arduous, and sometimes, futile. Others choose to use data recovery service. Aside from being costly, this option may also be disadvantageous for users since some of these companies do not use non-destructive methods.

Fortunately, various data recovery software applications are widely available online. Data recovery is defined as the process of extracting or obtaining data from failed, damaged, inaccessible, or corrupted primary storage media that could not be normally accessed. Data recovery is also a process that is used to retrieve and secure deleted information for forensic purposes or spying. Usually, data from such storage media formats like storage tapes, CDs, DVDs, hard disks, and other electronic formats, are most often salvaged during the data recovery process.

Data may become lost due to physical or logical damage. Physical damage to a storage data may result from mechanical failures like head crashes and failed motors or from a scratched dye layer or metallic substrate. Usually, physical damage cannot be repaired by computer end users simply because they do not have the technical expertise to do so. In such cases, the services of data recovery companies are consulted. Unfortunately, these consultations do not come cheap.

On the other hand, logical damage is mainly due to power outages which prevent or stop file system structures from being fully or completely written to the medium. Hardware and driver problems may also cause the same. Effects of logical damage may include system crashes, actual data loss, negative amounts of free spaces in hard drives, and inconsistent directories. To reduce incidence of logical damage, regular system maintenance should be done with a consistency checker to protect the file system software from bugs and to stop latent incompatibilities in the storage hardware design.

Multiple techniques may be used to recover data due to physically damaged hardware. Specialized disk imaging may be done to recover all readable bits from a storage media surface. Once the image is acquired, it still needs to be checked for logical damage. Logical data recovery, meanwhile, involves rebuilding of damaged files.
